Since 2003 the Black Hills Nationals Wrestling Tournament has been held annually in beautiful Spearfish, South Dakota, home of Black Hills State University and the dynamic Spearfish Canyon.”
This iconic Midwestern tournament converges hundreds of wrestling fans and followers from over 17 states nationwide. This event reaches out to competitors of all ages from 6 and under, an Adult Masters Division for ages 30+ years, and a Grand Masters Division for ages 50+ years. Simply, Black Hills Nationals creates an environment for all who strive to strengthen and support the art of wrestling. An average of 1,300 wrestlers from 24 states compete each year.
Frank A. Pavich, a long time wrestling enthusiast and Black Hills Native, is the director and producer of this event. Frank proved his love and dedication to the sport of wrestling and his hometown and brought them together, creating the Annual Black Hills Nationals Wrestling Tournament. Frank’s mission was to create an event that not only welcomed healthy competition from accomplished masters, but one that also inspired courage and confidence to its attending youth. Another part of Frank’s mission is philanthropic in nature. From supporting BHSU athletics to helping fund local youth activities like swimming and tennis, the Black Hills Nationals Wrestling Tournament enriches the lives of athletes of all ages. In 2022 Frank donated funds to help defray the medical costs of wrestlers involved in two life-threatening incidents—a motorcycle accident and a grizzly bear attack. Helping those in need is important and central to the Black Hills Nationals’ mission.
